   WE WILL PARTICIPATE WITH PCC'S READ 'N SEE: LRC BOOK CLUB BOTH FALL AND SPRING SEMESTERS IN READINGS, DISCUSSIONS AND ACTIVITIES FOR THE SACRED DOOR AND THE WOMEN OF BREWSTER'S PLACE. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND A TRIO BOOK CLUB MEETING FOR EACH BOOK LISTED BELOW.

 

Fall Semester (Sept.-Nov.)      

The Sacred Door and Other Stories: Cameroon Folktales of the Beba written by Makuchi is a collection of 33 folktales immersed with riddles, proverbs, songs, myths, and legends that capture the oral traditions of the Beba people in Cameroon. Cover of The Sacred Door and Other Stories

Makuchi retells the stories her mother told her, so that readers can make connections between African and North American oral narrative traditions. These tales strengthen the generalities of the human experiences without dismisses our differences.

The Women of Brewster Place is a novel by Gloria Naylor published in 1982. It follows the strength of seven black women who live in decaying rented houses on a walled-off street of an urban neighborhood. The middle-aged matriarch, The Women of Brewster PlaceMattie Michael, restless free spirit, Etta Mae Johnson, embracing racial pride, Kiswana Browne, self-destructor, Ciel Turner, single mother, Cora Lee, lesbian social acceptor, Lorraine, and the outspoken lesbian, Theresa.
