Textbook:       Understanding Business, 6th Edition, by Nichols, McHugh; Irwin, McGraw Hill Publishing.

 

Course Description:   This course provides a survey of the business world.  Topics include the basic principles and practices of contemporary business.  Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of business concepts as a foundation for studying other business subjects.

 

Course Objectives:    The student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of how businesses find and develop opportunities for growth, how the free-market system works, and how to manage business ethically and responsibly.
  2. Explain the various forms of business ownership and summarize the major elements of small business success.
  3. Explain how successful businesses empower employees to satisfy customers.
  4. Describe effective methods to motivate employees and how to manage employees to achieve success in their careers.
  5. Describe how to develop and implement customer-oriented marketing plans.

 

Evaluation:

            The final grade for the course will be determined as follows:

            1.         Exams will count as 75% of the final grade.

2.         Homework and Discussion Board participation will count as 25% of final grade.   

 

Grading Scale:   A (90-100)  B (80-89)  C (70-79)  D (60-69)  F (0-59)

 

Attendance:   

A student is expected to participate weekly in the online course, doing the homework, tests, Discussion Board, etc.  To receive credit for the course, the student must keep up with the schedule of homework and tests given below.  Failure to adhere to the schedule is an absence that can be excused only by prior notification of the absence to the instructor regardless of the reason.  All work missed during excused absences must be made up to the satisfaction of the instructor within one week after the work is due. Unexcused late homework  or postings to the Discussion Board will not be accepted.  Please read the Regulations on Class Attendance on p. 51 in the Student Handbook.     

 

Class Policies and  Instructions:

1.  Follow the Course Schedule closely and perform the homework, postings to the Discussion Board and tests as given in the on-line “Assignments” section of your course.  Homework for each chapter is due by the Sunday night after the weekly chapter assignments.  Exams must be completed by the Sunday night after the date of the assigned quiz.

2.  Make-up for late exams, homework or Discussion Board postings will only be allowed for true emergencies as approved by the instructor. Unapproved late work will be given a 10 point penalty off the earned score.

3.  If you experience difficulty or have any questions on the assigned material, contact the instructor right away.  He will assist you as much as possible.  It is very important to keep up with the assigned schedule – don’t let yourself get behind!
