This was the first meeting of the human services student organization, CARE for the 2003-2004 year. Topics discussed included three upcoming events, election of officers, and fundraising suggestions.
Nominations for officers remain open through Sunday, August 31, 2003 at 5:00 p.m., via email to Sheri Narin at narins@piedmont.cc.nc.us. You can nominate yourself or someone else but if you nominate someone else, please make sure you have their permission to do so. Anyone nominated for Co-president needs to have been in the human services program for at least a year; new students are welcome to be nominated for all other positions. The election of officers will be the following week from Monday, September 1, 2003 to Sunday, September 7, 2003 via email and in classes. The winners will be announced at the next CARE meeting, on Monday, September 8, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. in L120 (the conference room in L-Building).
Current nominations are:
Co-Presidents: Cindy Meadows, Heidi Griffin, Charlene Wilson (we will elect two)
Recording Secretary: Shonda Pulliam
Corresponding Secretary: No current nominations
Treasurer: Yvonne Hicks
Historian/Artist: Bryan Hoopengarner
Fundraising Coordinator: Selena Thornton
Upcoming events include Personality, Club Day and a one-day conference in Greensboro.
Personality is on Saturday, September 6, 2003 and will we have an activity there, probably similar to the Bingo game that was done at last year’s SOHSE conference. We are planning to have an activity aimed at adults since there are already several children’s events at the PCC booth. We still need volunteers to be there. This is the current list of volunteers:
8:00 a.m. (set-up) to 10:00 a.m. Yvonne
8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Selena
9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Jamey
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. Charlene, Bryan
11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Gloria
1:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Alison
We particularly need people from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please let Kathy Oakley or Sheri Narin know if you can help.
Club Day is Tuesday, September 9, 2003 and CARE will have a booth there to give information about CARE and the Human Services Technology Program. It was also suggested that there be a television with a videotape of some of the conference presentations. We currently have the following volunteers:
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Cindy, Charlene
12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Jamey, Laurie
12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Selena
We need two volunteers for 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and would welcome more volunteers. Please let Kathy Oakley or Sheri Narin know if you can help.
The first annual meeting of the North Carolina Organization for Human Services Education conference will be held on Friday, September 26, 2003. This is the local (North Carolina) version of SOHSE. The conference will be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; however, PCC has volunteered to do registration so we will need to be there earlier (exact time to be announced). The conference is at the Holiday Inn –Airport in Greensboro and includes breakfast and lunch. It costs $30.00 and you will need to have a check or money order made out to NCOHSE, and the conference registration form, turned in to Sheri Narin by Wednesday, September 10, 2003 by 5:30 p.m. This is a great opportunity to network with human services students from other schools and learn more about human services. You will need to provide your own transportation, so please talk with your fellow students about carpooling.
Fundraising suggestions included: candy sales, basket for Halloween, Pizza Hut dinner, stew sales, World of Products catalog sales, Pepsi product sales, and a silent auction. We need to raise at least $4500 to complete planned activities this year, including adopting families for the holidays, and the spring conference in Georgia. We will talk more about fundraising at the next meeting.
Welcome Back!
Respectfully submitted,
Sheri Narin
