This course covers the purpose, structure, focus, and techniques employed in effective interviewing. Emphasis is placed on observing, attending, listening, responding, recording, and summarizing of personal histories with instructor supervision. Upon completion, students should be able to perform the basic interviewing skills needed to function in the helping relationship.

    Class Three Tuesday, September 2, 2008 Discussion of out of class practice. Practice. Review and discuss Chapter One. Read chapter two.
    Class Four Thursday, September 4, 2008 Chapter two work sheet. Discussion of Open-ended questions practice. Read chapter three.  Practice, silence, SOLER, open-ended questions, confidentiality.
    Class Five Tuesday, September 9, 2008 Videotaped interviews.  Discussion of open-ended question use.  Strengths-based interviewing skills activity.  Discussion of compliments, using workbook activity on back of homework (p. 14, ex. 4). Videotaping.  Read chapter three, write up thoughts about interview, compliment other students from observed interviews.
    Class Six Thursday, September 11, 2008 Practice on reflection. Discussion of viewing videotape.  Observation of role play with instructor and Cheryl.  Beginning discussion of direct compliments. Think about people with whom you struggle and identify strengths that they have.
    Class Seven Tuesday, September 16, 2008 General review of chapter three concepts.  Practice with observers.  Practice direct compliments with reflection statements.  
    Class Eight Thursday, September 18, 2008 Went over individual chapter three concepts, then worked on indirect compliments, using reflection sheet, #1-15. Portfolio's due next week.  Read chapter four.  Practice indirect compliments.
    Class Nine Tuesday, September 23, 2008 Chapter Three Review Questions.  Started chapter four.  Practice.   
    Class Ten Thursday, September 25, 2008 Practice.  Completed indirect compliments #16-20.  Tried to watch Peter and Tim on DVD (technical problems).  Practice with coaches. Watch Peter and Tim scenario at home.  Post indirect compliment for yourself on your discussion board post for Blackboard. Read chapter five.
