This course covers the purpose, structure, focus, and techniques employed in effective interviewing. Emphasis is placed on observing, attending, listening, responding, recording, and summarizing of personal histories with instructor supervision. Upon completion, students should be able to perform the basic interviewing skills needed to function in the helping relationship.

Class One: Tuesday, January 9, 2007 Introductory Activity.  Review Syllabus.  Review Mock Interview. Read chapter one.
Class Two: Thursday, January 11, 2007 BB orientation. Review and discuss Chapter One. Read chapter two.
Class Three: Tuesday, January 16, 2007 Review practice interviews. Read chapter two Rosie interview. Chapter two work sheet. SOLER.   
Class Four:  Thursday, January 18, 2007 Artistic rendering of SOLER. Discussion. Watched videotape of Peter and Tim an discussed. Read chapter three.
Class Five: Tuesday, January 23, 2007 first half of chapter three.  Open-ended questions practice. Bring videotapes to next class.
Class Six:  Thursday, January 25, 2007 Practice and videotaping. Write a brief review of your tape, focusing on your strengths.
Class Seven: Tuesday, January 30, 2007  Review rest of chapter three.  Discussion of practice with open ended questions.  
Class Eight:  Thursday, February 1, 2007 Snow Day!  Don't forget that your portfolio's are due in class on Tuesday!
Class Nine: Tuesday, February 6, 2007 Finished chapter review. Practice of paraphrasing and indirect compliments using statements. Interviewing practice. Practiced statements 1-3 as a class, and 4-7 in small groups.  
Class Ten:  Thursday, February 8, 2007 Reviewed portfolios.  Did first few examples for exercise 7, pages 17-20.   Worked on practice statements 8-12. Can redo exercise 7, pages 17 to 20 and turn in for next class.  Read chapter four.  Before next Tuesday, write a direct compliment and an indirect compliment for each classmate on the discussion board; don't forget to include yourself!
Class Eleven: Tuesday, February 13, 2007 Chapter four review.  
Class Twelve: Thursday, February 15, 2007 Watched sections one through nine in Interviewing for solutions video.  Complete exercise 8 pages 21 to 22 in the workbook.  
Class Thirteen: Tuesday, February 20, 2007 Discussion of video and related concepts.  Review of exercise 8 answers.  
Class Fourteen:  Thursday, February 22, 2007 Interview practice in pairs.  Role play between Sheri and Jenny. Work on statements thirteen through fifteen on the reflection/direct compliment/compliment sheets.  Read chapter five.
Class Fifteen: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 Review of chapter five. Reviewed statements thirteen through fifteen.  
Class Sixteen: Thursday, March 1, 2007 Read about the Williams family. Conclude chapter five review.  Practice. 20 minute interview handout.
