This course covers the purpose, structure, focus, and techniques employed in effective interviewing. Emphasis is placed on observing, attending, listening, responding, recording, and summarizing of personal histories with instructor supervision. Upon completion, students should be able to perform the basic interviewing skills needed to function in the helping relationship.

Introductory listening activity, practice initial interviewing steps; Reviewed syllabus; Discussed "Rosie" from chapters one and two. Read Chapters One and Two
2)      Wednesday, January 12, 2005 Mock Interview, Introduction to SOLER, watched mandated client video, practiced introduction, confidentiality and finding strengths Review chapters one and two, think about strengths in the people around you this week.
3)      Wednesday, January 19, 2005 Snow Day  
4)      Monday, January 24, 2005 Reviewed chapters one and two, and started chapter three.  Watched brief segment of videotaped interview.  Workbook exercise #5, page 13. Read chapter three.  Bring videotape to class on January 26, 2005.
5)      Wednesday, January 26, 2005 First videotape.  Review chapter three.  Write up about the video.

6)      Monday, January 31, 2005

Practice open-ended questions.  SOLER drawings. Practice chapter three skills.  
7)      Wednesday, February 2, 2005   Practiced reflecting. General practiced.  Watched sections one and two of interview video.   Remember that portfolios are due in the next class.
8)      Monday, February 7, 2005 Review of chapter three.  Practice.  Re-viewed mandatory client Tim segment on tape.  Workbook exercise 8, pages 21-22.  Read chapter four - Review case of Beth before answering this week's question, but do not read interviews with Beth until after answering this week's questions.
9)      Wednesday, February 9, 2005 Discussed portfolios.  Discussed video interview with Tim.  Practice. Reviewed chapter four up to case of Beth.  
10)  Monday, February 14, 2005 Reviewed case of Beth.  Family Heirloom Exercise (exercise 12).  Role play practice.  
11)  Wednesday, February 16, 2005 Discussion of working with difficult clients and subsequent role plays.  Final review of chapter four. Read Chapter Five.

Practice with classmate feedback and review of skills videotape. Re-read chapter five and read chapter six.
14)  Monday, February 28, 2005 Reviewed chapter six and practiced, focusing on exceptions and ratings. Review chapter six.
