This course covers the purpose, structure, focus, and techniques employed in effective interviewing. Emphasis is placed on observing, attending, listening, responding, recording, and summarizing of personal histories with instructor supervision. Upon completion, students should be able to perform the basic interviewing skills needed to function in the helping relationship.

Class Two: Thursday, August 25, 2011 Review of Rosie in chapters one and two, role plays, discussion of differences between problem-solving and solution-building, SOLER. Read chapters 1-3
 Class Three: Tuesday, August 30, 2011 Repeating story told by Bobbi, and recorded by Jackie.  General discussion of listening.  Small group activity of explaining concepts in echoing chapter three - Jonia, Jay, Lazaro - echoing key words, Rose, Jacki, Shakira - Formulating questions, Bobbi, Vicki, Valerie - Listening.  Started worksheets HSE 123 Closed Inquiries Worksheet -  
Class Four:  Thursday, September 1, 2011 Practice -  Pairs, Shakira and Bobbi, Lazaro and Jackie, Jay and Vicki, Rose and Valerie, Lavern and Jonia. Continuation of closed inquiries worksheet - small groups: 1 - Bobbi, Vicki, Lazaro, 2 -  Jay, Shakira, Lavern, 3 - Valerie, Rose, Jonia, Jacki.  Very lively discussions.   
Class Five: Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Practice - pairs - Jay and Shakira, Vicki and Bobbi, Jacki and Lavern, Valerie and Rose, interaction between Peter and Tim.  Discussion of chapter three concepts including getting details, summarizing, paraphrasing, use of silence, nonverbal communication. CARE meeting for last 20 minutes of class.

 
Class Six:  Thursday, September 8, 2011 Continued review of chapter three, focusing on noticing client's nonverbal behaviors,  self-disclosing,, noticing process, complimenting, affirming client perceptions, natural empathy.  Interviewing practice and pairs - Jay and Lazaro,  Jonia and Valerie, Rose and Jacki, Shakira and Lavern, Bobbi and Vicki. Began practice with reflecting/compliments - # 8, 9  and 11 on worksheet.  
Class Seven:  Tuesday, September 13, 2011 Practice - Pairs: Shakira and Bobbi, Jonia and Rose, Valerie and Lavern, Jacki and Vicki, Jay and Sheri.   Chapter three concepts, continuation with reflection/compliments, # 1-7 gone over as a class.  
Class Eight: Thursday, September 15, 2011 Reflection and indirect compliment practice - # 12, 13, 14, 17.  Practice in pairs - Jonia and Lazaro, Rose and Vicki and Bobbi and Shakira, Jay and Jacki and Valerie. Continued review of chapter three including normalizing, returning the focus to the client, noticing hints of possibility, exploring client meanings, relationship questions, amplifying solution talk, and leading from one step behind (tied into client as expert). Reviewed scenario of Beth in chapter four.  
Class Nine:  Tuesday, September 20, 2011 Review of chapter four through page 56, then practice - pairs:  Jay and Jonia, Vicki and Lavern, Lazaro, Rose and Valerie.  Role Play demonstration with Sheri and Rose (and Bob).  Further exploration of chapter four, pages 57 and 58, and then brief discussion of differing levels of client motivations (wanting to make changes, wanting others to change and not wanting anything). Think about coaching.
Class Ten: Thursday, September 22, 2011

Talked briefly about solution focused coaching (strengths based).  Coaches randomly assigned - Bobbi for Jacki, Lazaro for Rose, Jay for Shakira, Jonia for Valerie, Lavern for Vicki.  Practice in same pairs but with Vicki joining Jonia and Valerie. Second set of practice - Bobbi and Jackie, Lazaro and Vicki, Rose and Jay, Shakira and Valerie.

 
Class Eleven: Tuesday, September 27, 2011 Discussion of death and grieving. Discussion of changes in technology.  Exercise with imagining absence of chair and presence of chair.   Explored chapter five with emphasis on goal development (relevant, meaningful, concrete, realistic, measurable)  and introduction of miracle question.  Stopped on page 85.  
Class Twelve:  Thursday, September 29, 2011 Discussion about goals (click here for notes), Bobbi then provided another example relating to household management. Practice in pairs: Jonia and Lavern, Shakira and Jacki, Bobbi and Rose, Jay and Lazaro and Vicki.  Continued chapter five with Ah Yan's miracle picture.  
Class Thirteen: Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Finished chapter five - reading Williams family - Bobbi - Insoo, Rose - Gladys, Jonia - Marcus, Jay - Offion, Jackie - Ayesh,  Shakira - Albert, Lazaro - Olayinka.  Last point made about chapter five and not prematurely closing.  Interviews in pairs with coaches and brief discussion of solution focused coaching.  Valerie - coach for Bobbi and Jonia, Shakira coach for Rose and Jacki, Vicki coach for Lazaro and Jay.

Discussed upcoming NCOHS conference.  Discussed midterm format and scenario.  Chose new coaches for weeks ten and twelve - Bobbi, Jay, Jonia, Shakira.  Practice -  Jay partnered with Lazaro and coached.   Jonia coached Rose and Jacki.  Bobbi coached Valerie and Vicki.  Discussion of keeping our own perceptions in the background and focusing on helping the client with what they perceive as most important.

Discussion of midterm and areas on which to focus - particularly focus on what client wants.  Practice with Jonia coaching Valerie and Rose, Shakira coaching Vicki and Lavern, and Coaches Jay and Bobbi working together.

Vicki interviewed client Lavern.   Jacki interviewed client Vicki.    Shakira interviewed client Jacki. Thanks to Vicki for rescuing us from technological glitches!

Discussed midterms and feedback.  Started chapter seven - notes - compliments: strengths, affirmation, ex.  You showed courage to come in to talk about your alcohol use and driving.  Bridge:  Connection - I agree that having a DUI is a stressor in your life and its important to resolve this.  Suggestion (follow-up):  Notice when you are not drinking and what stops your form drinking.  Read scenario on page 123 - Bobbi - Insoo, Vicki - Gladys, Rose – Al. Practice: Jay coaching Lazaro and Lavern, Bobbi partnered with Vicki and coaching, Shakira coaching Jackie and Rose.  Reminded class of Cell Phone policy.

Class Twenty-Three:  Thursday, November 10, 2011

Midterm video with Lazaro (don't forget to email feedback).  Practice - Shakira coaching/partners with Lazaro, Bobbi coaching Valerie and Jackie.  Jay coaching Lavern and Rose.

Groups: Jay, Jonia, Valerie, Rose   and   Shakira, Lavern, Bobbi and Vicki.  Brief practice at end with Vicki and Lavern working together, Valerie coaching Jay and Jonia, Rose coaching Bobbi and Shakira.

1st - Rose interviewing Bobbi - losing job - You are at risk of losing your job because you keep getting into arguments with your co-workers. 

2nd - Jacki interviewing Vicki - You are a college student.  Overall you are doing well.  However, you have strong anxiety about math classes

3rd - Jonia interviewing Jacki - You are a human services student who is starting their internship in a few weeks. 

4th - Vicki interviewing Rose - You have recently developed an interest in video poker
