 Week One:

What have been your experiences with Human Service professionals and/or agencies?  Describe in some detail the aspects of these situations that made them either positive or negative experiences.  What do you believe you would have done differently if you were the helper in this situation?

Week Two:

1.    Homework #1 Due: Thinking things through exercise (Values Clarification Exercise), pages 16 to 17, due Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

2.    Answer the question below on the discussion board by Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.   Respond to two students answers by Sunday at 8:00 p.m.

Explain the difference between exposing your values versus imposing them.  Which action, if either, is more important in human services work?  How can you put that concept into action to be effective as a human services worker?

 

Week Three:

1.  Homework #2 Due to Sheri Narin by Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.:  Complete the Self-Awareness Exercise, page 38.

2.   Answer the question below on the discussion board by Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.   Respond to two students answers by Sunday at 8:00 p.m.

From a self‑awareness perspective, what have you learned thus far about yourself from both your fieldwork experiences and classroom learning (i.e. lectures, readings, class discussions, etc.)?  Were you surprised in any way about anything new you have learned related to feelings, thoughts, or behaviors?

If so, explain how?

Choose one of the scenarios on pages 17 (bottom of page) through Page 20.  Make sure you identify which scenario you chose in your answer.  Answer the questions at the bottom of the scenario.   It is most helpful for your personal and professional development if you choose a scenario that truly represents a conflict for you.

Week Seven:

 Examine your past to determine if you were ever in a situation where they either observed or were a victim of sexual harassment.   What did you feel, think and do in response to this situation?  What might you do differently if the same situation were to occur today?

2)  Homework # 3 Due to Sheri Narin by Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Complete the Thinking Things Through Exercise, pages 50 to 51.

Week Eight:

1) Read Chapter Three

2) Answer the question on the discussion board by Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.   Respond to two students answers by Sunday at 8:00 p.m. 

Describe the difference between non assertive (passive), assertive, and aggressive behaviors, using an example of a situation from your own life and how you could handle it in each of those manners.

Week Nine:

On page 83, the Thinking Things Through exercise asks you to assess the roles that are met by your supervisor.  Answer the questions in that exercise, including assessing and listing the roles that are filled by your supervisor, and identifying the roles that are unmet.  Describe how you might use assertiveness skills to address these issues, and identify any commonalities between you and your supervisor that might help to create a positive working relationship.

2)  Homework # 4 Due to Sheri Narin by Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Complete the Concluding Exercises 1 and 2, page 94.

Week Ten:

1)      Answer the question on the discussion board by Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.   Respond to two students answers by Sunday at 8:00 p.m. 

Identify the predominant patterns of communication (active listening, none‑assertive versus assertive, etc.) within your family of origin, your current family, and within your fieldwork setting.  Now identify your own communication patterns within each of these settings. How similar and/or different are they?    What do you see as the strengths and limitations of your own style? How have you changed?  What areas do you believe you still need further improvement?

Week Eleven:

 1) Read Chapter Four

2)      Submit your verbatim to Sheri Narin by Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

3)      Answer the question on the discussion board by Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.   Respond to two students answers by Sunday at 8:00 p.m. 

Consider the concepts of  'micro' practice, 'mezzo' practice, and 'macro' practice.  Which types of practice holds the most appeal for you?  Which type holds the least appeal for you?  Describe what appeals to you and what does not appeal to you about each model.

 There are five stages to the AGATE model.  How do those steps compare to the helping process utilized in your internship placement?  Please be specific.

 2)  Homework # 6 Due to Sheri Narin by Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Complete the Concluding Exercises 1 and 2 on Page 123.

 Week Fifteen:

 1) Read Chapter Five

 2) Answer the question on the discussion board by Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.   Respond to two students answers by Sunday at 8:00 p.m. 

 Examine the “Culturally Biased Assumptions” listed on page 127.  Which of those assumptions do you find yourself making?  How can you challenge those assumptions within yourself and others?

 Week Sixteen:

 1)  Answer the question on the discussion board by Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.   Respond to two students answers by Sunday at 8:00 p.m. 

 Identify three things that you have learned from your internship experience. At least one of these things should be something you have learned about yourself. List and describe the three items of new knowledge.  What goals do you have for learning in your second internship?

 2)  Homework #7 Due to Sheri Narin by Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Choose three of the scenarios on pages 138 or 139.  Make sure you identify which scenarios you chose in your answer.  Answer the questions at the bottom of the scenario.
