This course examines and promotes understanding, sensitivity, awareness, and knowledge of human diversity. Emphasis is placed on professional responsibilities, duties, and skills critical to multicultural human services practice. Upon completion, students should be able to integrate and expand knowledge, skills, and cultural awareness relevant to diverse populations.

Class meets on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. and is a hybrid class, thus at least an hour a week will be spent completing online assignments.

Class One: Wednesday, January 10, 2007 Matching philosophies activity.  Review syllabus and class activities. BB orientation. 

This week’s homework assignment involves reading chapters one and two in Jerry Diller’s Cultural diversity: A primer for the human services.  For this week one homework assignment, you have three options to complete it.  All options are worth the same number of points and you will not get extra credit for completing more than one formJ.1)      Answer the chapter questions for the readings.2)      Develop a detailed outline of the most important points of the two chapters.3)      Take an open book, online quiz on the material (through Blackboard). The homework assignment is due in or by the next class (Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 1:00 p.m.).  If you choose option three, the online quiz, it must be completed by that time.

This week's homework assignment involves reading chapter three (Understanding Racism, Prejudice, and White Privilege) in Cultural diversity: A primer for the human services and chapter I (Homo Stereotypus:  Wired for Trouble) in Understanding prejudice and discrimination. To complete homework assignments for the above chapters, due in the next class, you have three options to complete it.  All options are worth the same number of points and you will not get extra credit for completing more than one form. This week's homework assignment involves reading Chapter IV (Racism Now)  in Understanding prejudice and discrimination and Chapter twelve (Working with African American clients) in Cultural Diversity.  Answer homework questions (Plous: Chapter IV) and questions (Diller: Chapter 12)
Class Seven:  Wednesday, February 21, 2007 Discussion of Chinese New Year and Taoism.  Watched What doe it mean to be white?
