HSE 260 Assignments, by week.

Week One:

1) Answer the following discussion board question(s) following the established schedule of responding to the question by 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and responding to two fellow students posts (for each question, if there is more than one question) by 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

You are starting your second semester of internship. What lessons did you learn during your first semester that will help you with your second internship?

2) Review chapter five

Week Two:

Read the first scenario (misjudging client?s comprehension) on page 147 and answer the questions that follow it.

2) Submit your learning plan by Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

Week Three:

2) Answer the following discussion board question(s) following the established schedule of responding to the question by 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and responding to two fellow students posts (for each question, if there is more than one question) by 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Answer the questions in the ?Thinking Things Through Exercise? on page 150.

Week Four:

Answer question number three in the Concluding exercises on page 153.

Week Five:

1) Read chapter six

Complete the Thinking Things Through exercise at the bottom of page 157 (this should look familiar to those of you who have taken SWK 220).

Week Six:

Discuss how you believe your internship experience is similar to real life work experience and how it is different from this as well.

2) Homework # 1 is Due: Pages 206 to 207, answer the questions following the second, third and fifth scenarios (second ? Randy, p. 206; third ? stereotypes about homeless, p. 206; fifth ? working with a 24 year old Latina woman, p. 207). This should be submitted by Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

Week Seven:

Of the ethical and legal issues discussed in chapter six, which one affected you the most? What feelings does this issue bring up for you? What does it say about your values?
Imagine that one of your best friends revealed that he or she had violated the ethical standard that you chose in question one. What do you imagine your reaction would be? How might you choose to deal with your situation? How would you reveal your values to this person?

2) Your internship description is due by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday

Week Eight:

1) Read chapter seven

· From the thinking things through exercise on page 225: Think of a relationship with a specific client. Using the factors listed above the exercise on page 225, name areas in which there is a strong identification and those in which there is not. If great differences exist, do you think it is still possible to work successfully with the client? With counter-transference issues might be worth examining?

Week Nine:

· From the thinking things through exercise on page 234: From the examples on table 7.1, page 234, select which types of difficult clients you would find most challenging to work with. Discuss what feelings and thoughts they may evoke in you. Elaborate on why these particular clients may be more trying to work with. Explain how you might work with them.

2) Due Wednesday at 5:00 p.m., Homework # 2 Due: Page 239, both thinking things through exercises, and page 241, the first thinking things through exercises.

Week Ten:

1) Read chapter eight

· From page 257: Discuss a situation where teamwork and cohesion in your agency contributed to a more positive outcome for the clients that the agency serves. Then tell about another situation where a lack of teamwork and cohesion played a part in a negative client outcome.

Week Eleven:

· From page 257, read the scenario, and then answer the thinking things through questions: How would you handle the preceding scenario? Can you think of any negative experiences you have had with friends, either at work or personally as related to this type of situation? Describe the situation, your feelings, and ways you could have handled the situation differently?

2) Submit your verbatim by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday

Week Twelve:

· From page 262: Consider all the ancillary staff with whom you work. List the stressors they typically face in a day. Compare those you experience. Can you recognize that their jobs hold their own special kinds of stress?

From page 263: Consider ways you might work within the community as an agency representative. What might your role be? What are some of your specific job duties? Which would you consider to be the most important?

Week Thirteen:

1) Read chapter nine.

· From page 274: You were hired by a large human service organization whose funding was strong. Within several years, however, budget cuts began to loom over the agency. As the last one hired, you would be the first one to go. You really enjoyed you work and the contact with colleagues, but you became demoralized at the constant threat of layoffs. No one could give you any clear idea about the future of your job. You begin to look for other opportunities and finally left this position due to the uncertainty of your future. How would you feel if this were to happen to you? Would you leave? Or would you stay and weather the storm? What factors would influence your decision?

2) Psychosocial Due by Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

Week Fourteen:

· From page 278: Describe how the symptoms of burnout have applied to you. Give an example of each symptom you have experienced, and how you dealt with it. Develop a plan of action to deal with your list of symptoms, should they become more serious.

3) Homework # 3 Due: Page 286, concluding exercises #1 and #3 (20 points) by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Week Fifteen

· What do you need to do to terminate with your clients? How are you feeling about this process? What is important about how you handle the process of termination with both clients and coworkers?

Week Sixteen

· As you finish at your internship site, what goals (from the semester) do you plan to continue to work towards achieving?
