Can I get a Social Work Degree at PCC?

Most schools of social work are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (click here for a link to that website).  The requirements for programs of social work are very specific and the accreditation is done at the level of bachelor and master's degree programs.  They do not give accreditation to programs at the Associate degree level,  and the guidelines preclude the program from being an "Associate in Social Work."

Can I get a Bachelor of Social Work Degree after leaving PCC with my Associate of Applied Science Degree?

Because their requirements are very specific, most bachelor of social work programs will not accept many of the human services courses taught in the community college system.  Thus, you can enter a BSW program, but probably the only courses that will transfer will be the general education classes. Thus, if you are planning to go directly from PCC to a program to get a Bachelor's of Social Work degree, you may be better served in the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science programs at PCC, as those credits generally transfer to schools in the UNC systems, letting you enter as a junior. Click here for a link about state policy,  here for a link to the North Carolina Community College Systems site, which has links to information .  Click here for a North Carolina College Transfer Guide for students.   However, if you are wanting to work directly after graduating and want to further your education at a later point, or are interested in a bachelor's degree but you do not feel it has to be a Bachelor of Social Work, then the Associate of Applied Science in Human Services Program may be right for you.  Click here for more information on jobs in human services.

What courses outside of the Human Services Technology Program would be helpful to take for later transfer?

Bachelor degree programs generally have a science requirement and a language requirement, as well as a higher math requirement.  Some of these courses you can take as part of the Human Services Program.  For example, instead of ENG 115 Oral Communications, you can take COM 251 Public Speaking.  For the Humanities requirement, you can take SPA 111 to get a start on other school's foreign language requirements.  For the math requirement, we require MAT 140 Survey of Mathematics, or MAT 171 Precalculus Algebra.  Taking Precalculus Algebra would be a better transfer course.   You can also take extra history and humanities courses.  An individual plan can be worked out to receive both the A.A.S. degree and an A.A. or A.S. degree in approximately three to three and a half years.  Please contact the Program Coordinator to discuss this option further.

Can I get a Bachelor's Degree in something else after leaving PCC?

There are other programs that will take the credits you earn and let you enter as a junior, and we are working on agreements with additional colleges.  The two programs that currently accept most or all of our credits are UNCG for their Bachelor of Science in Community Health Education program (Click here for more information on that program), and a distance learning program through Empire State College, which is part of the State University of New York. Click here for the website on that program and the admission process.  You can also contact Dr. Joyce McKnight, the Coordinator of Community and Human Services/distance learning, at 518-587-2100 ext. 303.   Dr. McKnight may be able to answer questions about the courses you will take in the future.  She can also be contacted at: Joyce.McKnight@esc.edu  . However, admissions needs to be done through the website.  The Empire State Program can help you complete a Bachelor's degree in their human development program.  There are other schools that may accept some or all of our credits but you would need to speak directly with personnel at those schools.  Those schools include:  Shaw University, Winston-Salem State University, Barton College, Elon University, and Averett University

What if I want to get a Master's Degree?

There are different options for Master's Degrees.  Generally, Master's of Social Work programs will accept students with Bachelor's Degree's in a variety of subjects.  For example, my Bachelor's degree is in Psychology and I was able to enter a Master's of Social Work program and complete that degree.  You can also get a Master's degree in Human Services or related fields.
