NC Live Off-Campus Access Policy

Access to Internet-based resources provided by Piedmont Community College is intended to support the research, educational, and administrative purposes of the college. By signing or electronically submitting the registration form, the individual agrees to abide by the PCC Computer & Network User Guidelines, consents to receive periodic e-mail updates (password changes and database updates), and agrees to maintain a valid and current e-mail account. Misuse may result in loss of library privileges, disciplinary action by the college, and/or legal prosecution by the College and/or North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education (NC LIVE).

The license agreements between NC LIVE and their database vendors authorize academic libraries to provide remote access to their students, faculty, and staff only. Off-campus access for the general public will be provided by public libraries. The local institution may not change, alter, or violate this regulation. Individuals must access NC LIVE using their own Internet Service Provider.

Off-campus access is available to currently registered students at Piedmont Community College and to currently employed faculty and staff. Patrons may not share the password.

After the registration form is submitted, the Technical Services Librarian will confirm that a student is currently enrolled. For faculty or staff registrations, the Technical Services Librarian will confirm with the Personnel Office that the individual is currently employed. After confirming current enrollment or employment, the Technical Services Librarian will e-mail the NC Live password to the applicant within 48 hours, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. If this e-mail message is returned undelivered for any reason (“user unknown,” “account over quota,” “message undeliverable,” etc.), the application process ends. 

Confirmations of enrollment or employment will be made each time a new password is issued (a password is valid for twelve months).

Piedmont Community College is not responsible for any loss of data or any damage to software or hardware that may result from accessing NC LIVE or any of its resources. It is not the responsibility of the Learning Resources Centers to instruct patrons in the use or configuration of their personal computer and/or printer.

In order to access NC LIVE an individual must have the following:

• Internet Access Provider

• 486 or higher computer (Pentium is recommended)

• 16MB RAM memory (32 MB recommended)

• Web browser

• Internet Explorer 4 or 5

• Netscape 4.x

• Java enabled

• Cookies turned on

 Instructions

Netscape 4.x

• Click on Edit in the toolbar near the top of the screen.

• Choose Preferences from the pull down menu.

• Under the Category section, choose Advanced.

• When Advanced is clicked, the screen on the right changes to one with a list of options; look down the list and place a check beside Enable Java and accept all cookies.

 Internet Explorer 5

• Click on Tools in the toolbar near the top of the screen.

• Choose Internet Options from the pull down menu.

• Click on the Security tab and then choose Custom Level.

• Scroll down the list that pops up until you reach the section on cookies, then choose Enable by clicking on the box to the left of it. Next click OK.

• Now click on the Advanced tab.

• Scroll down the list that pops up until you reach Java console enabled and JIT compiler; enable both of these options.

• Click apply and then OK.

• Type http://www.nclive.org in your address bar.

• Press enter.

• A login page will appear. Select Piedmont Community College as your library. In the next blank, type the password.

• CLICK SUBMIT.

• You may now begin using NC LIVE.
